None of the crew spoke much the evening after the nagas. Everyone knew of the nagas, and many had been present on voyages where tributes were due. The nagas demanded periodic offerings, but the Syndicate had always prepared the bounty beforehand and the ships were ready. It was all expected. Scheduled. Sometimes the nagas brought their sand viper, but they had never required a crew sacrifice, just the expected material tribute.

Leanna was lying on the bed in her cabin, holding Nan’s book. But she wasn’t thinking of Nan, she was thinking of Violet. How she longed to speak with her. How she missed her.

She felt the book vibrate lightly in her hand. She gasped and shot up, gingerly placing the book in the middle of the bed, watching, waiting. Finally, it sprung open, but the pages in front of her were blank. “Nan?” she said out loud. Nothing appeared. She ran her fingers softly along the page and thought she could feel it quivering, almost imperceptibly, light indentations forming as if someone was trying to write with a pen with little ink, bearing down hard. Finally, some faint words appeared. In Violet’s rounded, wide-looped handwriting:

Leanna, where are you? It’s Vi. If you can hear me, show me something. Anything.
